Clinical Science

Program Overview
The Clinical Science program consists of six semesters for a total of 74 weeks, including 48 weeks of basic required rotations and 26 weeks of elective rotations. Clinical clerkships provide a supervised educational experience, a part of the clinical component of the program of medical education and takes place in a teaching hospital acceptable to the University. As active team members of the student and house staff, the students are supervised by attending physicians as they learn different aspects of medicine. Each student’s performance is evaluated by their clinical supervisor according to standards set by the University.
Students who wish to transfer into the Clinical program must have completed Basic Sciences program at SMUFOM. Students wishing to practice medicine in the US are also required to have passed the United States Medical Licensure Exam Step Examinations.

Clinical Science Curriculum:
Clinical core clerkships occur during the third and fourth year of medical education. They are full-time clerkships where the students learn practical part of medicine in a clinical setting. This provides an opportunity to utilize skills and information previously acquired in the Basic Science courses and Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses.The Core Rotations are required by each student and consist of the following:

BASIC REQUIRED CLERKSHIPS         48 Weeks

  1. INTERNAL MEDICINE 12 Weeks
  2. OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY 6 Weeks
  3. PEDIATRICS 6 Weeks
  4. PRIMARY CARE/FAMILY MEDICINE/PREVENTIVE MEDICINE 6 Weeks
  5. PSYCHIATRY 6 Weeks
  6. SURGERY 12 Weeks

SURGICAL SUBSPECIALTY   4 Weeks
Surgical subspecialty must be a four (4) week clerkship from the following:

  1. Anesthesiology f. Pediatric surgery
  2. Neurosurgery g. Plastic surgery
  3. Ophthalmology h. Thoracic surgery
  4. Otorhinolaryngology i. Urology
  5. Orthopedic surgery j. Trauma surgery

ELECTIVE CLINICAL CLERKSHIPS    26 Weeks
Maximum 6 weeks; Minimum 4 electives needed from the following:

  1. ANESTHESIOLOGY/PAIN MANAGEMENT 17. FAMILY MEDICINE
  2. EMERGENCY MEDICINE 18. INTERNAL MEDICINE
  3. GYNECOLOGY 19. OBSTETRICS
